Solutions for People who need Print Access

Introduction to DAISY

Efforts to provide accessible media for the blind, low vision, and other members of the print challenged community have led to the development of a number of approaches and formats, especially with the recent explosion of technological developments.  At this time, we are witnessing the emergence of a set of standards that are badly needed.  The DAISY consortium was formed to meet that need.

DAISY – Digital Accessible Information SYstem – is a series of specifications of what is required to produce truly accessible media – accessible digital talking books.  Within each of the specifications that have been released, the DAISY Consortium has categorized six types of books outlined in the DAISY guidelines and training material.

The DAISY standard originated in Sweden in 1994.  By 1997, the DAISY Consortium had been formed and had decided to make the proprietary standard public.  There have been four formal releases of the specifications defining the book types as developed by the DAISY Consortium:

Ø      DAISY 2.0, released in 1998

Ø      DAISY 2.02, released in February, 2001

Ø      DAISY 3.0, released in March, 2002, also known as the ANSI/NISO 2002, and the NISO 1.1 standard.

Ø      NISO 2005, released April 12, 2005, by NISO – the Z39.86 standard entitled “2005 Specifications for the Digital Talking Book.

The first DAISY release obtained almost no support.  But in contrast DAISY 2.02 became quite popular and is today the most widely used.  Note that the display file (a marked up e-text or web page file) from the NISO 2005 version became, and is today, the NIMAS standard display file.  To find out more about the NIMAS files and process, go to the NIMAS Introduction page.
